History of QBE Insurance

QBE Insurance began as Bankers' and Traders' Insurance Company Limited in 1921. The growth of QBE Insurance was immediately felt in 1959 with the acquisition of the Equitable Probate and General Insurance Company Limited. In 1973, QBE Insurance, as it is known today, was formed and officially listed in the Australian Stock Exchange with the monumental merger of Queensland Insurance, Bankers' and Traders' and Equitable. Subsequent acquisitions strengthened the solid foundation of QBE Insurance. From 1988 until 2002, QBE Insurance acquisitions include Universal Insurance Company of Ireland, Imperial Chemicals Reinsurance Limited, Australian Eagle Insurance Company Limited, American Royal Reinsurance Company in New York, Allstate Reinsurance Company Limited in London, Trade Indemnity Australia Limited, Iron Trades Insurance Company Limited in London, ex HIH portfolios in Australia, New Zealand and Argentina, and small portfolios in Australia and Indonesia.
